Enhancing Sugar Handling Efficiency with Roller Gates

When it comes to handling fine sugar in industrial applications, ensuring dust tightness and seamless material flow is crucial. This is where components like Roller Gates play a vital role in optimizing processes and preventing material leakage. In this case study, we delve into a specific case where the challenge was to replace a 3-way diverter with a solution that not only addressed dust tightness concerns but also provided flexibility in feeding any divert leg at any time. Let's explore how the innovative use of Roller Gates helped meet these requirements effectively.

The customer's requirement for dust tightness and the ability to feed any divert leg at will presented a unique challenge that called for a customized solution. Traditional Gravity Vee diverters were considered initially, but due to height constraints, an alternative approach was needed. The decision was made to leverage the proven success of Roller Gates with electropolished blades for sugar applications. By incorporating three Roller Gates with an inlet trunk design, we were able to achieve the desired functionality while maintaining the necessary compactness.

Roller Gates are renowned for their reliability and efficiency in handling bulk materials such as sugar. With electropolished blades that ensure smooth material flow and minimal residue buildup, these gates are ideal for applications where hygiene and product purity are paramount. The customer's positive experience with standard Roller Gates in their other processes made this solution an obvious choice.

The ability to feed any leg at any time eliminates the need for a separate diverter, thereby reducing installation and maintenance costs. This not only saves on equipment expenses but also minimizes downtime and potential production losses.

  • 300mm Salina Roller Gate Valve.
  • Valve body and blade are 304 stainless steel.
  • Material contact is 304 stainless steel and polymer.
  • Milled access slots in side frame allows removal and replacement of bonnet seals while the gate valve remains in service.
  • Valve body is modified to accept proximity switches (plugged if indication switches are not utilized).
  • Oversized double acting air cylinder actuator equipped with a magno-piston for use with magnetic reed position indication switches.
  • Valve is rated for 180°F(82°C) maximum continuous service. PET side seals and upper and lower bonnet seals are live loaded and silicone rubber backed. Valve also includes cam-adjustable slide rollers and PET roller spacers. End seal and bonnet blade guides are UHMW-PE.
  • (WS1) - Valve blade is electropolished to handle sticky materials.
  • (AX) - Valve is approved for Ex II 1/2 D Ex h IIIC T100°C Da/Db Tamb -29°C to +40°C (Only internal area of the valve is rated to Category 1).  Valve includes grounding lug, ATEX approved actuator, ATEX IOM and tag with certificate number.  (All actuator, switch, and air control solenoid accessory options must also be ATEX approved)

Qty. (3) HSR-SS-300-DIN, 304 Stainless Steel Square to Round Flanged Transition, 4" O.A.H. DIN bolt hole pattern.

Qty. (3) 4F25A-24EX2-24VDC, Air Control Assembly, double solenoid, 24v DC ATEX II 2 GD c T4 T130 °C Certified solenoid G 1/4 ports, flow rate 1100 l/min, includes Polyurethane tubing, fittings and mounting brackets.
